Abeokuta – Alhaji Jamiu Balogun, popularly known as "Youngest", has emerged as a prominent aspirant for the chairmanship of the Ogun State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), presenting what supporters describe as a people-centred agenda focused on unity, welfare, modernization and sustainable development of the union.
Backed by supporters across various motor parks in the state, Balogun is being projected as a grassroots leader whose experience within the transport sector positions him to lead the union at a time many members believe renewed direction is required.
According to his campaign message, "Youngest" is not a newcomer to the affairs of the union but someone who has grown through its ranks, working closely with drivers, conductors, ticket officials and park managers across Ogun State.
Supporters say his familiarity with the realities of transport workers—from Abeokuta to Ijebu-Ode, Sagamu, Ilaro, Sango-Ota and Owode—has earned him the confidence of many members who see him as someone capable of addressing their everyday challenges.
The campaign also describes his nickname, "Youngest", as symbolic of his youthful energy, innovative thinking and determination to blend the wisdom of experienced leaders with fresh ideas aimed at repositioning the union.
Speaking on his vision for the union, Balogun emphasized that Ogun NURTW requires leadership built on service, inclusiveness and accountability.
"Our vision is simple: A United NURTW, A Prosperous Member and A Respected Union," he stated.
Central to his agenda is the promotion of peace and reconciliation within the union. He pledged to foster unity among members and strengthen internal discipline, noting that harmonious relationships remain essential to the growth of the organisation across the state's 20 local government areas.
Balogun also outlined an ambitious welfare programme aimed at improving the quality of life of transport workers and their families.
His proposed initiatives include partnerships with healthcare institutions to provide affordable medical services, scholarship opportunities for members' children, cooperative loan schemes, grants and vocational training programmes for drivers, conductors and widows.
In addition, he promised to pursue comprehensive accident insurance coverage and legal support for members while advocating improved security, better sanitation and more dignified working conditions across motor parks in the state.
On modernization, the chairmanship hopeful pledged to work closely with the Ogun State Government, security agencies, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant stakeholders to improve transport operations.
According to him, embracing technology through digital ticketing systems, improved park administration and enhanced security measures will not only strengthen the union but also contribute positively to the state's internally generated revenue and overall transportation system.
Supporters further describe Balogun as an accessible leader who believes in maintaining close contact with members at the grassroots.
Rather than operating from the office alone, they say he intends to remain visible in motor parks across the state, operating an open-door policy that gives every member, regardless of status, an opportunity to contribute to decision-making.
The campaign insists that the forthcoming leadership process should be driven by competence, integrity and commitment to service rather than financial influence or imposition.
As consultations continue among stakeholders, elders and members of the union, supporters of Alhaji Jamiu Balogun maintain that his combination of experience, vision and grassroots acceptance makes him a strong contender to lead Ogun State NURTW into a new era of peace, progress and prosperity.
They expressed confidence that, if elected, his administration would reposition the Ogun State chapter as one of the most peaceful, organised and development-oriented branches of the National Union of Road Transport Workers in Nigeria.
