Donald Duke, presidential candidate of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), has criticized the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, insisting that Nigeria lacks the financial capacity to sustain it.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Tuesday, Duke described the project as “unnecessary,” arguing that government resources should instead be directed toward essential services such as electricity and healthcare.
“Nigeria cannot afford the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. I don’t think the road will go beyond Epe,” he said, adding that the project appeared more focused on land reclamation than genuine infrastructure needs.
Duke noted that an existing road already connects Lagos to Calabar, stressing that rather than embarking on costly new projects, government should repair and upgrade the current route.
He lamented the imbalance in public spending, pointing out that Nigeria’s healthcare sector received only ₦36 million in capital budget allocations last year, a figure he described as “pathetic” for a nation of 230 million people.
He also highlighted the chronic underfunding of the education system.
“The amount spent on that road could be better spent providing electricity or upgrading the healthcare system,” Duke emphasized.
